Beaches

 

In recent years Tenby has been awarded many Blue Flag Awards in recognition of its clean beaches and water. In 2007, the North Beach, the Castle Beach and the South Beach all received a Blue Flag Award and all of Pembrokeshire's beaches received a total of 11 Blue Flag awards, supporting the view that the area is one of the cleanest holiday destinations not just in Wales, but the entire UK.

As Pembrokeshire's main holiday resort, Tenby is proud of its a high standard of beaches, offering plenty of facilities and boasting various environmental awards. The four main beach areas are described in greater detail.

 

South Beach

 

The South Beach is made up of 2 kilometres of golden sand, stretching from St Catherine's Island to Giltar Point. The beach is backed by sand dunes leading to the the oldest established golf course in Wales and looks out toward Caldey Island. The South Beach has won a Tidy Britain Group Seaside Award.

At the north end of the beach can be found a variety of shops, café, hire facilities, toilets (with disabled access) and a car park. Lifeguards operate daily (10am-6pm) throughout the summer.

Between the period 1st May to 30th September, dogs should be kept on a lead on the area of the South Beach nearest the town, however no restrictions apply on the majority of the South Beach.

 

Castle Beach

 

Castle Beach lies in the small cove between Castle Hill and the East Cliff. At low tide it is possible to walk out to St. Catherine's Island and to explore the many rock pools around the cliffs.

Access to Castle Beach is via the slipway from the top of the harbour and is a short walk from the centre of town. Alongside the slipway can be found a café, hire facility, deck chair rental and toilets. A variety of boat trips run from the beach at low tide. The beach is patrolled by a Lifeguard (10am-6pm) during the summer season.

Between the period 1st May to 30th September, dogs should be kept on a lead while on Castle Beach.

 

Harbour Beach

 

The Harbour Beach is found nestling at the rear of the Harbour, amongst an assortment of small fishing boats. A steep slipway or a variety of steps lead back to the town on either side of the beach, or you may choose to stroll along the promenade to under the cliffs to the North Beach.

Harbour beach is a short walk from Tenby town centre, and provides toilets and café facilities. Also in the Harbour area you will discover Tenby Sailing Club and the small Fishermen's Chapel. At high tide, a variety of boat trips run from the Harbour, to Caldy Island or fishing / sightseeing trips.

Between the period 1st May to 30th September, dogs should be kept on a lead when on the Harbour Beach.

 

North Beach

North Beach comprises of a golden stretch of sandy beach, dotted with occasional rock pools and the prominent Goskar Rock. Found between the Harbour Beach and the North Cliffs, the beach is overlooked by a promenade and Tenby town itself. The beach offers great views over Carmarthen Bay and is accessed via the steps from North Cliff or through the Harbour. During the summer this beach is often crowded due to its popularity and ease of access.

The beach holds a Blue Flag award and the water quality is excellent, complying with EC guideline standards. Dogs are banned from the beach from May to September.

Situated just above the beach, is a shop, café, toilets, and various hire facilities. A lifeguard service operates in summer daily (10am-6pm) and there is a Tourist Information Centre above the beach, along the promenade.

Between the period 1st May to 30th September, all dogs on the North Beach should be kept on a lead.
